Brahmi, The brain booster...

Brahmi

Bacopa monniera and Centella asiatica

In India, Bacopa monniera, known as "Brahmi", is revered in the indigenous system of medicine as a nerve tonic. In early literature, the name Brahmi was also used to refer to another plant species.  Centella asiatica Linn., known as Indian penniwort. However, these plants are distinctly different. The name Jala-brahmi or water-brahmi assigned to Bacopa monniera in ancient Sanskrit writings provides the differentiation. The vernacular name "mandukaparni", often confused with Brahmi, in fact refers to Centella asiatica.
A critical study of the comparative phytochemistry, pharmacology and therapeutic properties of these two botanicals also support the view that they are distinct:
The Charaka Samhita considers them both to be promoters of cognitive functions, but it suggests that Brahmi is superior to mandukaparni. Brahmi is used to treat specific mental disorders such as insanity and epilepsy, while mandukaparni is a general rejuvenative tonic which improves mental health.
Brahmi promotes fertility and sustains implantation of the embryo in the uterus, while mandukaparni tends to reject the embryo. This suggests that the plant materials have opposite effects on uterine functions.
The Sushruta Samhita defines the properties of the herbs. Brahmi belongs to tikta rasa (bitter), while mandukaparni belongs to kasaya rasa (astringent).
Centella asiatica

INTRODUCTION

Centella asiatica is a small herbaceous annual plant of the family Apiaceae, native to Asia. Also known as Gotu kola it has been used as a medicinal herb for thousands of years in India, China and Indonesia. Its ability to heal wounds, improve mental clarity, and treat skin conditions such as leprosy and psoriasis were important reasons for its extensive use.
As per Ayurveda Gotu kola herb is one of the chief herbs for revitalizing the nerves and brain cells; hence primarily known as a brain food in India. Its has been used for the purposes like boosting memory, wound healing, a mild diuretic, increasing concentration, alertness, as well as anti-anxiety and anti-stress. It has also been used for centuries in the treatment of liver and kidney problems.
Mandukaparni is one of the herbs mentioned in all ancient scriptures of ayurveda. It is often confused with brahmi (Bacopa monnieri), as Mandukaparni has synonyms like brahmi, brahma manduki, manduki, ekaparni etc. Infact mandukaparni and brahmi are entirely different plants, though have similar properties. Maharishi Charaka has categorized Mandukaparni as medhya (intellect promoting) or nervine tonic and as vayahstha pana (promotes longevity) and preserves youth. Bhavaprakasa has mentioned it as divya mahousadhi-the divine great drug. Sushruta has cited it as an alleviator of pitta dosha. Charaka has praised it to be an effective remedy for tuberculosis with deviation.

The plant grows in moist places throughout India; it is commonly seen in marshy banks of rivers, streams and ponds and irrigated lawns, fields etc. It is also found in Sri Lanka and Madagascar.  The leaves are long-petioled, 1.5-6.5 cm in diameter, more rounded, with toothed margins. The Sanskrit name Mandukaparni refers to the leaves of the plant which resemble the claw of a frog. The flowers, minute, pinkish red, 3-6 in cluster. The fruit 8 mm long, like a grain of barley. The fruit 8 mm long, like a grain of barley. 7-9 ridged.
The botanical name of Mandukaparni is Centella asiatica and it belongs to family Umbelliferae, apiaceae. The glucosides, brahmoside and brahminoside have been isolated with their gennin brahmic acid. The Madagascar variety contains different glycoside known as asiaticoside, which is not found in Sri Lankan variety. But, arelated compound, centelloside and triterpenic acids, centoic and along with centellic acids have been reported (Indian J. Chem. Soc. 1956, 33, 893). The sapogenins and flavonoid components were same in both varieties. A new triterpene acid madasiatic acid – isolated and characterized. Also polyacetylenes (I, II, III, IV and V) and nine other acetylenes isolated. Also, madecassoside and asiaticoside isolated.
In pharmacological and clinical trials Centella asiatica has been found to improve the power of concentration and general ability and behavior of mentally retarded children. The clinical trials demonstrated that the extract increases the intelligence quotient in mentally retarded children. In a clinical trial an Ayurvedic drug having Centella asiatica as one of the main ingredients reported marked improvement is seen in children with behavioral problems. It is found to improve short-term memory and learning performance due to its possible nootropic action involving cholinergic and GABAergic modulation.

HUMAN SKIN WOUND DRESSINGS TO TREAT CUTANEOUS ULCERS

Researchers from university of Laval have shown that it is possible to treat venous ulcers unresponsive to conventional treatment with wound dressing made from human skin grow in vitro . A study published recently in the journal advances in skin and wound care demonstrate how its approach was successfully used to treat venomous lower extremity ulcers

standard treatment for ulcer involves methodically cleaning these wounds and applying compression bandages. Drugs became available around 20 years ago but they are expensive and their efficacy has been somewhat limited. A graft using the patient's own skin can be effective but is problematic because it requires a significant amount of skin to be removed from elsewhere on the body.
this problem inspired researchers to use there expertise with invitro skin culture to create a bio medical free biological dressing .this process is complex and requires several steps :

  1. remove 1 to 2 cm skin from patient
  2. isolate the appropriate cell
  3. grow them in vitro
  4. create  a skin substitute with dermis and epidermis
  5. After eight weeks of growth the self-assembled sheets of skin substitute can be applied over the ulcers, much like bandages
The cell secrete molecules that speed up healing to set natural healing process in motion .this test was carried on at least five  patients and it took about 7 days for healing 14 ulcers clinical study are ready to be set up for using this treatment on burning wound to.

Expired medicine is a devil : Is it a fact?

Once I had taken 81mg. enteric-coated aspirin, prescribed by our doctor, every day. I was suffering from Headache. Here it makes sense and it is economical, to look for this OTC medicine in larger bottles. I also take a physician-prescribed Calcium+Vitamin D caplet each day, so that I could look to save money by purchasing a larger quantity. Both of those OTC medicines had “expiry dates” on the bottles and a quick calculation is the determining factor for purchasing the larger quantities.

Any OTC  or prescription , have expiration dates on them…sometime imprinted on the bottom of the tubes. I always look for the expiration date on OTC salves and prescribed salves are dispensed in smaller quantities, as the pharmacist.

There’s no single rule specifically for expired drugs and supplements, Branding to  variety of products, regulatory requirements, and other factors that could influence a product’s safety and efficacy. In general, expiry dates are conservative, and it is fof sure that consumers can have confidence that drug labeling claims will be accurate and up to date.

Practically it is the reality is that we don’t store drugs under ideal circumstances. So when absolute certainty is required, we stick to drug products that are not expired. When absolutely necessary, expired drugs are probably safe, that is our mantality . however, the potency may be compromised.

When you are talking about supplements, herbals, and homeopathy, keep in mind that any expiry dates are usually arbitrary. And before you flush or toss those expired drugs, find ways to dispose of them in a way that minimizes the environmental impact and potential for harm.

Personally, I hold onto all sorts of expired medicine in my house. As noted above, it may not be at its full potency, but it’s not dangerous and it’s better than nothing. Once quick question on a specific case above, what effect does the breakdown of aspirin have other than the smell? It sounds like both of the active components are still present. I’ve never had ill effects, and it seems to work just as well for me, but then again, I sometimes wonder how much things like aspirin are influenced by how well we think they’ll work, a form of the placebo effect enhancing the natural pain-killing aspects of the medicine.

what’s found in willow bark and it’s the metabolite of aspirin (acetylsalycylic acid) that has the biological effect. But the reason we don’t just swallow it as is is because it’s more irritating to the stomach than the acetylized form. That would be the problem with the degraded product, as far as I know.

I tend to keep stuff (in the pharmacy containers) in a closet (dark and dry) for ages, especially something I only use in case of a flare up. I’ve been told different things (from “it’s all arbitrary” to “it’s useless after the date” by various pharmacists and recently tossed (trash, not toilet) a bunch because I was told most recently that the stuff all degrades over time and the dates are a good rule of thumb.

WHAT IS THE FUTURE ?

As always I was in a Hess what to write in my next post and was sitting with a pen in my hand and copy on my desk my brother came to me and asked me to watch the new shinchan movie with him my answer was same get lost I want to write a post and you do not know how difficult is this and he said that's why i am asking you to come and watch the movie because right now you do not know what to write and after the movie you will get your idea ........ well it really worked I got an idea what to right next........ so here i am with my new post

Future
it is always the word which fascinated all of us everybody thinks about it but nobody knows what is going to happen
Future of diseases
we can classify the centuries from past in terms of disease for eg plague in 14,18 and 19th century likewise there are many more so what would be future diseases in my view these can be the future diseases

Obesity It may be one of the major problems in future because of changing lifestyle technology made it all simple but we became slaves for new techs. if we talk about data the no of obese persons in country has been increased by 5%
%age of obesity in different states of India
As the graph shows obesity is increasing and i am sure that this will be the major disease in future which will widely affect every one of us

Tension nearly 40% of young generation is affected by this right now and tension is increasing day by day we got jobs we are placed but still there is competition to face how to earn more how to learn more I mean that we are so much involved in this that many of us forgot how to laugh and now they are taking laughter therapy to learn it again
stress is only due to our lifestyle change your way of living you are out of it

Diabetes now a days diabetes is said to be a wealthy mans disease because number of upper middles class persons involved with the disease but it is also affecting the middle class society and there is a sudden boom in the number of affected individuals
this must be common  one of my fathers friend was recently diagnosed with diabetes as i visited to him I asked Uncle you are a doctor how can you be a diabetic ,he replied no worry even america has 30% of its population diabetic ...... this is what came to my mind Are we in a race to america so that we can achieve a level higher than them in diabetes  .

Sexually transmitted diseases and AIDS There is very little difference between open mind and mischief mind and this little difference has affected as up-to a large extent in last few years  the cases of AIDS has increased and the STDs are also on the same way .

Respiratory diseases  The data for respiratory disease shocked me  as this disease is increasing day by day and there is not only one reason pollution ,smoking and many more to count

Malnutrition As I said the number of obese persons is increasing and at the same time no of malnutrition's is also increasing the reason is increasing population India is the second largest country with population and seventh with land but still 40 % of its population is poor and like the same way many African countries are also affected .

Alcoholism and Drugs addiction many times we get confuse alcohol and drugs as the solution to our problems but these things lead us to other problems..

WHAT IS THE REASON
Nature has balanced every thing that is every thing is connected to each other when a rich eats more than his need ,he eats the share of a poor man ,in this case the rich man become obese and poor is malnutrition
Social networking has made it all easy to meet new people but to meet new people we have to cover our self with a screen so that we can show what the other person like ........ we usually meet at Facebook not in real
It is good to be open minded but any thing more than enough is bad
A government is one who works for the people who can not walk ,not for providing vehicles to them who are running fast

alcohol is not a status symbol

WHERE IS PHARMACY
We are the field that deals with every aspect of drug from discovery to sales but this never mean that we want a society which totally depends on drugs always remember Drugs were developed to correct the system no drug was developed to be employed in system we are totally dependent on the drugs we even need drugs to sleep ..... this is because we do not believe in our own system a slight headache is cured by drug although you can get rid of it from a little rest
The problem that i fell is most dangerous for all of us is now a days we are developing resistance to many of drugs it is only because doctors are mindlessly prescribing drugs of higher efficacy and dose to the normal persons which is causing drug resistance and this may be the most dangerous face of future .........

so these were my views of course I did not suggested ways to get over these problems because i am still working on them may be you can find them in my next post and i am sure that there may be suggestions and questions so please do mention them in the comment box i will be glad to reply them
